The Technology Region Aachen has long been familiar to future-oriented companies as an IT location. Back in 1990 Ericsson concentrated its global research and development activities in the Ericsson Eurolab Deutschland in Herzogenrath near Aachen. The latest decision by Microsoft to establish its new „European Microsoft Innovation Centre“ in Aachen is a further sign of the region's strengths in this field.
Research and development
Companies profit from the proximity to Belgium and the Netherlands on the one hand and from the competencies of Aachen University in research and development in the field of mobile communication on the other hand. Philips too found an ideal site for its research laboratory on the universities' doorstep – and has been here for almost 50 years.
Over 13 chairs at Aachen University with 8 teaching and research departments are involved in computer sciences. Interdisciplinary research and teaching is also carried out in this field at the Fachhochschule Aachen. Further top-ranking research institutions such as the two famous Fraunhofer Institutes for Production Technology and for Laser Technology as well as the Jülich Research Center also provide a high level of competence.
