Even Charlemagne gathered the learned men of Europe around him. With his palace school he turned his favourite palatinate into a melting pot of artistic and intellectual life. One out of every ten researchers in Germany now works in the Aachen region.
The huge research and development potential in the Aachen region hakes it a very innovative location. The RWTH Aachen (Aachen University), Fachhochschule Aachen (Aachen University of Applied Sciences), the world famous Jülich Research Centre, four Fraunhofer Institutes as well as numerous further private research institutions, including the German Wool Research Institute and the Helmholtz Institute for Medical Technology, constitute a research infrastructure such as can be found in only a very few regions in the world.
Of the around 30,000 students at Aachen University, 40 percent are enrolled in engineering science subjects. With 142 million euros as third-party funds, RWTH Aachen University leads the field in Germany. The Aachen University of Applied Sciences, one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Germany, has around 7,500 students. 250 research and development projects are pursued here. The Aachen University of Applied Sciences alone has 5.2 million euros for research and external funds, over two thirds of which is from the regional economy.
What makes the Aachen universities so special is the interdisciplinary work amongst the institutes and the internationalised teaching. Innovative companies such as Ericsson, Ford, Saint-Gobain Sekurit or Microsoft who have already settled in the region use these synergies. Another aspect they value about the climate is the high number and quality of the engineering graduates.
